Sureño at The Opposite House
Sureño is a restaurant based on Mediterranean cuisine located in Beijing, China. Concrete walls define the more public, circulatory areas of Sureño while the spaces beyond with their surfaces of warm woods and blue olive grove patterns remind one of the Mediterranean. Winding through the entry, the hearth of the restaurant is revealed – the pizza oven – with its surrounding counter, allowing patrons to gather and watch the chefs at work. Breaks in the ceiling allow light to stream through and the ceiling’s slope upward in the public dining area emphasizes the view of the sunken garden. The wooden floor extends into the sunken garden to become a deck and the water pools within the restaurant and outside at the sunken garden ensure their connection to each other and the sea is not missed.
