The Red Chamber | China House at The Mandarin Oriental Hotel
Inspired by the vibrant 1930’s Shanghai Art Deco period, The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok’s China House restaurant design concept rests on a re-examination of “period” decoration and how to convey the time period while avoiding the overly literal. The result is a fresh evocation achieved by mixing different elements of the period: decadence represented by use of rich materials such as hide upholstery and Macassar Ebony, elegant calligraphy of Tang dynasty poems describing the significance of fine dining, and graphic representations of period figures and scenes echoed throughout the space, which is divided into The Red Chamber (main dining area), free-standing Blue Bar, entry, and Grand Staircase.
